Search Engines:
The Basics
Featured Publication If you want to find something on the Web, try a search engine.   These are web sites featuring an ability to find other sites on the web containing content you seek.   This is an introduction to using search engines.
Examples of search engines are www.altavista.com, www.lycos.com, and www.infoseek.com.   Once you arrive at a search engine website, type your topic into the search window, using words which are likely to identify uniquely the subject of interest.   It doesn't even matter anymore if your query takes the form of a complete sentence or question.
A useful feature of newer browsers (Internet Explorer 5 and Netscape Navigator 4, for example) allows typing search words into the location window of the browser, normally reserved for the web address.   This enables the browser itself  to act as a search engine.
