Proverbs 17 1A dry bit is better where peace does abound 1Than meat in a house where a fight may be found 2A wise servant mentors a son causing shame 2And in among kin has a share in his name 3The pot is for silver the furnace for gold 3Jehovah investigates hearts manifold 4A doer of evil will heed false advice 4A liar is hearing a naughty word twice 5One mocking the poor seeks his Maker defy 5One glad at misfortune will never squeak by 6As grandchildren serve as the prize of old age 6So children in glory give father his wage 7Abundance of speech does a fool not befit 7Much less how a prince's lips lies do submit 8A gift in the eyes of its owner is grace 8As gemstones show light by the glint on each face 9The one seeking love is concealing a sin 9Repeating a yearning discretion to win 10A simple reproof to the wise humbles more 10Than striking a fool to the hundredth encore 11The one that is ill even venom does crave 11It takes a cruel angel to make him behave 12A mother bear robbed of her cubs may be met 12But by a fool's folly be one not beset 13The one who rewards gracious good deeds with ill 13Has evil pronounced on his house ever still 14A maddening first is the excess of juice 14Leave off before contest bemeddles the sluice 15Excusing the wicked and wronging the true 15Jehovah does both as disgusting construe 16Now why does a fool give of wisdom the price 16But lack willing heart to take any advice 17A friend loves forever and always will do 17A brother is born for adversity too 18A man lacking heart will shake hands to be sure 18In front of a neighbour he makes it secure 19One loving rebellion is loving debate 19And one seeks destruction who raises the gate 20To those false in heart do good things happen less 20And those turned of tongue will fall into distress 21With sorrow a fool to a mother is born 21A fool does indeed make a father forlorn 22A heart that is cheerful may well be a cure 22A spirit afflicted no man can endure 23A wicked man seizes a bribe and is glad 23Corrupting the pathways of justice for bad 24As wisdom is staring the wise in the face 24The eyes of a fool settle far from their place 25The son who is foolish his father does grieve 25His mother from grief will now get no reprieve 26And punishing righteous men doesn't seem sweet 26Nor striking a prince for his righteousness meet 27The one having knowledge is silent to death 27The man full of reason is cool of a breath 28A fool when he's silent makes prudent his guise 28One shutting his lips will be valued as wise © 2004-2008 Ward Green. Proverbs 17 1 Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, Than a house full of feasting with strife. Proverbs 17 2 A servant that dealeth wisely shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, And shall have part in the inheritance among the brethren. Proverbs 17 3 The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; But Jehovah trieth the hearts. Proverbs 17 4 An evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips; [And] a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue. Proverbs 17 5 Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker; [And] he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished. Proverbs 17 6 Children`s children are the crown of old men; And the glory of children are their fathers. Proverbs 17 7 Excellent speech becometh not a fool; Much less do lying lips a prince. Proverbs 17 8 A bribe is [as] a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it; Whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth. Proverbs 17 9 He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; But he that harpeth on a matter separateth chief friends. Proverbs 17 10 A rebuke entereth deeper into one that hath understanding Than a hundred stripes into a fool. Proverbs 17 11 An evil man seeketh only rebellion; Therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him. Proverbs 17 12 Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, Rather than a fool in his folly. Proverbs 17 13 Whoso rewardeth evil for good, Evil shall not depart from his house. Proverbs 17 14 The beginning of strife is [as] when one letteth out water: Therefore leave off contention, before there is quarrelling. Proverbs 17 15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah. Proverbs 17 16 Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, Seeing he hath no understanding? Proverbs 17 17 A friend loveth at all times; And a brother is born for adversity. Proverbs 17 18 A man void of understanding striketh hands, And becometh surety in the presence of his neighbor. Proverbs 17 19 He loveth transgression that loveth strife: He that raiseth high his gate seeketh destruction. Proverbs 17 20 He that hath a wayward heart findeth no good; And he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief. Proverbs 17 21 He that begetteth a fool [doeth it] to his sorrow; And the father of a fool hath no joy. Proverbs 17 22 A cheerful heart is a good medicine; But a broken spirit drieth up the bones. Proverbs 17 23 A wicked man receiveth a bribe out of the bosom, To pervert the ways of justice. Proverbs 17 24 Wisdom is before the face of him that hath understanding; But the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth. Proverbs 17 25 A foolish son is a grief to his father, And bitterness to her that bare him. Proverbs 17 26 Also to punish the righteous is not good, [Nor] to smite the noble for [their] uprightness. Proverbs 17 27 He that spareth his words hath knowledge; And he that is of a cool spirit is a man of understanding. Proverbs 17 28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise; When he shutteth his lips, he is [esteemed as] prudent. |
